Israeli Emigration Surges Among Young Adults
This trend is especially notable among educated young adults aged 20 to 39, with many of them either leaving for the first time or returning to their countries after previously immigrating to Israel.
A report published by a media outlet on Monday cited a special Knesset study detailing these developments, which also noted that a relatively small proportion of those who left have returned to Israel.
The Knesset Research and Information Center's findings were presented ahead of a session of the parliamentary Committee for Immigration and Absorption, set to meet on Monday to discuss the growing issue of emigration from Israel.
The media outlet described the findings as presenting "a troubling picture of Israel’s emigration patterns."
According to data from Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics referenced in the report, an average of about 36,000 Israelis emigrated annually between 2009 and 2021.
However, a dramatic increase in emigration began in 2022, with 55,000 Israelis leaving that year—a 46% rise compared to 2021.
The number of emigrants surged further in 2023, with approximately 82,700 Israelis departing, marking a 50% increase over the previous year.
Despite the rising number of people leaving, the report indicated that the return rate remains low, with only around 24,000 Israelis returning to the country each year.
The report also highlighted that a large proportion of emigrants and returnees in 2022 were young adults, with roughly 40% of those leaving and 38% of those returning falling into the 20 to 39 age group—significantly higher than their share of the overall population, which is 27%.
