Eleven Palestinians get released after months in Israeli detention

(MENAFN) Israeli forces freed 11 Palestinian detainees from the Gaza Strip on Wednesday following prolonged periods of imprisonment, according to statements from the Hamas-run Prisoners’ Information Office. The detainees were handed over at the Kerem Shalom crossing in southern Gaza, though their medical conditions were not immediately disclosed.

The freed individuals were taken by the International Committee of the Red Cross to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al-Balah for thorough medical evaluations. Past releases of Palestinian prisoners by Israel have revealed alarming health issues, including malnutrition, injuries, and evidence of torture endured during incarceration.

On October 13, under a Gaza ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement, Israel released nearly 2,000 detainees, including approximately 1,700 from Gaza. Reports indicated that many of these individuals arrived in severely weakened states, recounting experiences of mistreatment, starvation, and humiliation within Israeli prisons.

Human rights organizations note that more than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, remain detained in Israel under conditions marked by torture, insufficient food, and denial of proper medical care, which has contributed to the deaths of numerous prisoners.

Since October 2023, Israeli military actions in Gaza have resulted in nearly 70,700 fatalities, predominantly women and children, with over 170,000 others wounded, further highlighting the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
