Israeli Soldiers Suicide Death Toll Surpasses Sixty
An Israeli newspaper reported that the conscripted soldier suffered critical injuries after shooting himself at the base and was later declared dead at a medical facility Tuesday evening.
Military officials initially confirmed only that a soldier sustained serious gunshot wounds at a northern installation and subsequently died at hospital. Military police launched an investigation into the circumstances, the statement noted.
The crisis has reached alarming proportions. Data from the Knesset Research and Information Center reveals that 279 Israeli soldiers attempted suicide between January 2024 and July 2025—approximately one completed suicide for every seven attempts.
The Israeli Defense Forces previously acknowledged that 48 soldiers took their own lives during active service since the war's inception. The newspaper added that 13 additional service members died by suicide outside military duty due to psychological trauma, including six fatalities this year alone.
The newspaper documented 20 military suicides in 2024, with 16 more occurring through July of the current year. At least four additional soldiers have died by suicide since that reporting period.
Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir publicly recognized the escalating mental health emergency in October, revealing that thousands of soldiers were undergoing psychological care. "It is time for our political leaders to say this clearly and take action to stop the rise of hatred," he stated, while instructing commanders to identify struggling personnel and facilitate immediate treatment access.
A public broadcaster reported in late July that nearly 10,000 of the 19,000 Israeli soldiers wounded in Gaza suffer from psychological conditions including post-traumatic stress disorder, with cases being managed through the Defense Ministry's Rehabilitation Department.
The Gaza conflict has resulted in approximately 70,700 Palestinian casualties—predominantly women and children—with over 171,000 injured, while leaving the territory devastated since October 2023.
