Israel to arm ten thousand reserve soldiers permanently in their homes

(MENAFN) The Israeli military is preparing to equip roughly 10,000 reserve soldiers with firearms that will remain in their homes, a measure reportedly inspired by the events of October 7, 2023, according to reports.

Local sources indicate the initiative focuses on Division “David” (96), a unit created around a year ago that primarily includes older reservists, typically aged 40 to 60, who volunteer for service after completing their regular reserve obligations.

The soldiers "will receive an M4 or upgraded M16 rifle, magazines, a combat vest and a helmet," with the equipment delivered directly to their residences to allow immediate deployment to their battalion sector in emergencies. The firearms would be secured in large safes provided by the army.

"Rifles to be kept at home year-round, aiming to dramatically cut response times in future emergencies," the reports added.

Under the new plan, reservists would don uniforms only for a few weeks each year, meaning that for most of the time, the rifles would remain in their personal possession while they function as civilians.

Israeli military officials cited the October 7 events as a major lesson, marking a significant departure from prewar policy, when many soldiers—including combat personnel—were prohibited from taking weapons home over concerns about theft or safety incidents during leave.

Reports estimate Israel has around 400,000 reserve soldiers. Data from the Israeli military indicate that 923 officers and soldiers have been killed since the start of the Gaza genocide in October 2023.

Meanwhile, Israeli operations in Gaza have resulted in nearly 71,000 Palestinian deaths, mostly women and children, with more than 171,000 injured since October 2023, according to reports.

Despite a ceasefire that began on October 10, Israel has reportedly continued to breach the agreement by not allowing the agreed number of medical aid trucks into Gaza, exacerbating what the health ministry describes as a severe and ongoing health emergency.
