Lebanon Leader Denounces Israeli Strikes on Southern, Eastern Regions

(MENAFN) The Lebanese military is executing government directives south of the Litani River in southern Lebanon with "professionalism and precision," President Joseph Aoun declared Tuesday.

In an official statement, Aoun denounced Israeli bombardments that struck multiple municipalities across southern and eastern Lebanon on Monday following immediate evacuation warnings. An Israeli airstrike also demolished a three-story structure in Sidon early Tuesday, wounding one individual.

Aoun stated the Israeli assaults "raise serious questions" as they materialized on the eve of a ceasefire mechanism committee session, which carries responsibility for terminating hostilities and addressing concrete measures to reestablish security and stability in southern Lebanon, including the withdrawal of Israeli forces to the southern border, the release of Lebanese detainees and the completion of the Lebanese army's deployment in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

"Israel's continued attacks aim to derail local, regional and international efforts to curb the ongoing escalation, despite Lebanon's cooperation and government measures to extend state authority south of the Litani River," he said.

"The Lebanese army has implemented those measures with professionalism, precision, and discipline."

Aoun reiterated his appeal for global powers to intervene decisively to halt Israeli bombardments in Lebanon and empower the mechanism committee to fulfill its responsibilities.

The strikes occurred as Israeli media outlets published reports regarding preparations for a potentially massive offensive against Hezbollah installations should the Lebanese government and military fail to dismantle the organization's arsenal.

Lebanon and Israel have maintained a ceasefire since November 2024 that terminated over a year of cross-border confrontations amid the Gaza conflict. More than 4,000 individuals were killed, and 17,000 others sustained injuries.

According to the ceasefire terms, the Israeli military was scheduled to withdraw from southern Lebanon this January, but it only partially retreated and continues maintaining military presence at five border installations.
