Israeli Troops Conduct Ground Incursions in Southern Syria

(MENAFN) Israeli forces carried out ground operations in southern Syria’s Quneitra and Daraa countrysides on Saturday, while a small demonstration in Suwayda displayed Israeli flags and images of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to reports.

In Quneitra province, two Israeli vehicles advanced from Tel Abu Ghithar toward the western outskirts of Sayda al-Hanout village. The forces fired gunshots at uninhabited farmland, seemingly to intimidate locals and shepherds, without causing injuries, the reports added.

In western Daraa province, another Israeli unit composed of five armored vehicles moved toward the Jamleh Company area. The force established a temporary checkpoint on Wadi Jamleh Road, conducted limited searches, and withdrew afterward, heightening tensions among residents during its presence.

These incidents occurred despite an agreement reached on Jan. 6 between Syria and Israel to implement a US-supervised communication mechanism aimed at coordinating information sharing, reducing military escalation, and exploring diplomatic and commercial opportunities.

Israeli operations in southern Syria, particularly in Quneitra and Daraa, have included near-daily strikes, incursions, detentions, checkpoints, and destruction of farmland. Israel has occupied much of Syria’s Golan Heights since 1967. Following the ouster of former President Bashar al-Assad on Dec. 8, 2024, Israel declared the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement and advanced into the Syrian buffer zone.

Syrian authorities say that continued Israeli actions undermine stability and hinder efforts to attract investment and improve economic conditions.
