Palestinians Face Interrogation, Detention Returning to Gaza Via Rafah
On Wednesday, Gaza’s Government Media Office reported that only 488 of 1,800 travelers had crossed Rafah in either direction since its reopening through Tuesday, reflecting an Israeli compliance rate of roughly 27%. Of those, 275 left Gaza, 213 entered, and 26 were denied permission to exit toward Egypt during the same period.
The Palestinian side of the crossing was reopened on Feb. 2 after being closed since May 2024, but operations remain highly restricted and subject to stringent conditions.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory noted on Feb. 5 that returnees reported being taken by armed individuals, backed by the Israeli army and identified as members of the Abu Shabab militia, to an Israeli military checkpoint.
There, some were reportedly handcuffed, blindfolded, searched, threatened, and had personal belongings confiscated.
Additionally, Israel’s public broadcaster reported that members of the Abu Shabab militia were permitted to participate in searches of Palestinians entering and exiting Rafah, raising further concerns about safety and fair treatment at the crossing.
