Israeli Forces Detain Gaza-Bound Flotilla Activists
(MENAFN) An Israeli organization advocating for Palestinian rights, Adalah, urged on Monday that legal teams must be given immediate access to activists aboard a Gaza-bound aid vessel after they were detained by Israel.
On Monday morning, the Israeli navy started intercepting ships belonging to the Global Sumud Flotilla while they were in international waters in the Mediterranean Sea, proceeding to detain the activists on board.
In a statement obtained by Anadolu, Adalah also requested that authorities disclose the detainees’ locations and clarify their detention conditions.
“According to available information so far, Israeli forces have taken control of several ships and led participants away, while details regarding their places of detention and health conditions remain limited at this stage," it stated.
Adalah explained that its legal team, together with volunteer attorneys, moved to the port of Ashdod immediately after the interception in order to provide legal representation for the participants.
"Intercepting civilian vessels in international waters and detaining participants, while preventing the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, constitutes a serious violation of international law and comes as part of Israel’s continued illegal blockade and mass starvation policies against the population in Gaza.”
The organization also affirmed that its lawyers will continue tracking the detainees’ situation and will challenge the legality of their ongoing detention.
Earlier on Monday, the Israeli website Walla reported that roughly 100 activists had been detained so far from the flotilla, which was located about 100 miles off the Israeli coastline.
