Israel Gets Added to UN Sexual Violence Blacklist
According to a statement from the Palestinian Foreign Ministry, the “UN inclusion of Israel on the ‘List of Shame’ for Perpetrators of Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones is a scientific and logical outcome.” The ministry voiced its backing for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, noting what it called Israeli efforts to sway the UN report that resulted in Israel’s addition to the list.
The statement alleged that Israel and its “official and unofficial institutions have practiced torture, sexual violence, and rape against our people in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially in detention centers." It further asserted that Israel “has used sexual violence as a weapon of war, which constitutes a war crime and a crime against humanity."
The ministry emphasized that Israel has pursued a “systematic and widespread policy” over recent years aimed at “intimidating our people and creating conditions of forced displacement.”
Finally, the statement concluded that Israel’s inclusion on the UN sexual violence blacklist represents “an objective, realistic, and scientific outcome of diplomatic efforts, especially in light of the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem.”
