Israeli Airport Authority Reports Heavy Financial Losses from US Military Presence
Authorities warned that the losses could escalate into the billions if the situation persists, citing severe operational constraints at the country’s main international airport near Tel Aviv.
According to remarks reported by Israel’s public broadcaster KAN, Israel Airports Authority Director General Sharon Kedmi said the airport is currently functioning at roughly one-third of its normal capacity. He attributed the reduction to space and logistical limitations linked to the presence of US military refueling aircraft.
Kedmi stated that around 70% of airport activity has been restricted, adding that the system is operating “at the limit of our capabilities.” He also warned that further flight cancellations may be announced in the coming days if conditions do not improve.
The authority had originally projected around 18 million passengers for the year, but current estimates suggest the figure may fall below 15 million. Officials also warned that up to 3 million travelers could be affected by ongoing disruptions, with foreign airlines reportedly delaying the resumption of services.
Dozens of US tanker aircraft are currently stationed at Ben Gurion Airport, which has reportedly placed additional strain on civilian aviation operations.
Earlier reports from Israeli media, citing Civil Aviation Authority chief Shmuel Zakay, described the airport as being heavily impacted by the military presence, saying it has disrupted civilian flight schedules, delayed the return of international carriers, and increased airfare costs.
Zakay reportedly warned Transportation Minister Miri Regev that Ben Gurion had effectively become “a military airfield with limited civilian activity,” raising concerns over the long-term impact on Israel’s aviation sector.
