Israeli Forces Advance in Southern Lebanon, Take Control of Historic Fortress
According to reports, Israeli troops seized control of Beaufort Castle, a Crusader-era stronghold that is around 900 years old and historically regarded as a strategic observation point overlooking southern Lebanon. Following the takeover, images were circulated showing Israeli flags and those of the Golani Brigade raised above the site.
The fortress, also known locally as Qalaat al-Chakif, had previously been used by Israeli forces during their prolonged presence in southern Lebanon prior to the withdrawal in 2000.
The announcement was accompanied by statements from Israeli leadership, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu describing the operation as a notable achievement. He also indicated he had instructed the military to intensify ground operations in Lebanese territory.
He further stated:
“Now my directive is to deepen and expand our hold in places that were under Hezbollah’s control. The capture of Beaufort is a dramatic stage and a dramatic shift in the policy we are leading,” he said.
Officials also claimed that no weapons were discovered inside the fortress after its capture, based on military reporting.
The escalation comes alongside a continued wave of airstrikes in southern Lebanon targeting areas associated with Hezbollah. Reports indicate that recent bombardments have intensified, particularly around the city of Nabatieh and surrounding areas, which are widely viewed as a focal point for the ongoing campaign.
Footage emerging from nearby locations shows heavy smoke rising from multiple impact zones, with significant destruction reported in residential districts and surrounding infrastructure as aerial attacks continue.
