US Envoy Says Lebanon-Israel Talks Have Reached Critical Stage
Following a meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun on Monday, US Ambassador Michel Issa said the discussions were advancing positively and had reached a “point of no return.”
“It is very important for an official to choose what he wants and move forward with it, especially if it is the only choice to end a painful and harsh situation like the one Lebanon is experiencing,” Issa said.
According to reports, the meeting focused on US-backed efforts to advance negotiations between Lebanon and Israel and to halt ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory.
Issa said the talks are expected to continue in Washington and commended the Lebanese delegation participating in the negotiations, describing it as “highly professional” and “effective.”
“The members of the team speak about the Lebanese file clearly and frankly,” he said.
Since April, Lebanon and Israel have held four rounds of negotiations in Washington as part of efforts to secure an end to Israeli military actions and achieve a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese land.
Commenting on the recent exchange of attacks between Iran and Israel that followed Israeli strikes on Beirut, the US envoy characterized the developments as a “political message.”
