Israel Weighs Potential Gaza Escalation as Truce Negotiations Continue

(MENAFN) According to reports, the Israeli military is preparing contingency plans for a possible return to large-scale combat operations in Gaza, even as ceasefire discussions continue in Cairo.

Haaretz reported that Israel’s Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has recently approved several operational proposals developed by the Southern Command, reflecting planning for the possibility of renewed ground activity in the Gaza Strip. Military sources familiar with the discussions said these plans have been reviewed in recent weeks.

However, Israeli political officials have reportedly not given final approval for any expansion of the conflict, despite suggestions that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pushed for readiness measures in anticipation of renewed operations.

Israeli military assessments cited in reports argue that Hamas has rebuilt parts of its operational capacity, which the army has referenced as a justification for maintaining preparedness for further fighting.

At the same time, Palestinian factions are engaged in negotiations in Cairo under Egyptian mediation, focusing on potential arrangements for Gaza’s post-conflict governance and discussions surrounding disarmament. According to reports, these talks remain incomplete, with multiple key issues still unresolved.

Some Palestinian representatives involved in the discussions have indicated that the negotiations are aimed at a gradual framework for de-escalation. Mustafa Barghouti of the Palestinian National Initiative, participating in the talks, was cited as saying that Israel is creating conditions that could encourage displacement from Gaza through worsening humanitarian conditions.

Israeli officials referenced in reporting have denied such intentions, while the broader diplomatic process remains fluid, with no finalized agreement yet reached on governance or long-term security arrangements in the territory.
