Former European Leaders Urge EU to Act Against Israel

(MENAFN) A coalition of more than 460 former European political figures has issued an editorial demanding that the European Union adopt stricter measures against Israel in response to its military actions in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Among the signatories are former Irish leaders Leo Varadkar and Eamon Gilmore, along with former European Parliament President Pat Cox. The list also includes ex-prime ministers such as Italy’s Massimo d’Alema and Romano Prodi, Slovenia’s Robert Golob, and Sweden’s Stefan Lofven, according to a news agency on Wednesday.

The editorial precedes an upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg and a summit in Brussels, where proposals to limit trade with Israel and suspend parts of the EU-Israel Association Agreement are expected to be debated.

So far, the 27-member bloc has not enacted any punitive measures against Israel, which has continued its military campaign since October 2023 despite a ceasefire, while also carrying out strikes in Lebanon, Iran, and Syria.

The group expressed its demands in uncompromising language, stating: "The European Union cannot stand aside.

"It must now act urgently to implement recommendations such as those repeatedly made since July 2025 in a series of public statements by a group of now over 460 European former ministers, ambassadors and senior officials."
